Our latest webinar – The Friends of Czech Heritage

Launched last year in June, our free series of talks continues exploring Europa Nostra Award-winning projects and heritage community initiatives that are of particular interest for the UK.

The Friends of Czech Heritage is a British charity and Europa Nostra member organisation, campaigning to raise funds for the repair and conservation of the substantial legacy of historic buildings and their contents, artefacts, gardens and parks in the Czech Republic.

In this recording from 28th March 2024, you can hear Chairman, Peter Jamieson, and Co-founder, Barbara Peacock, tell us about the journey this charity has been on and the impact they have been able to make in preserving Czech heritage and building links with the UK. There are some particularly interesting points raised about heritage volunteering and training.

Next up! 2023 European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award-winners Cleveland Pools (UK)

Dating back to the 19th-century, these open air baths have had a significant place in the hearts of the people of the surrounding region but remained closed and disused since the 1980s. A unique historic site with a rich cultural heritage, the pools have now undergone a comprehensive restoration thanks to a community-based campaign.

This community-led approach was particularly praised by the Europa Nostra Awards judges, as was the use of green energy and a holistic approach to reinstating the site’s original function ‘while adapting it to 21st-century standards’. They are the oldest open air public swimming pools in the UK and probably western Europe and are Grade 2* listed. However, very sadly, this year’s exceptional rainfall has seen the Cleveland Pools site flooded twice already, with significant damage caused to the plant room in particular.

Come and join us on May 23rd to hear how this award-winning heritage initiative is facing into the climate crisis, as the Cleveland Pool’s Trustees share the site’s 20-year journey of restoration and adaptation.
